Mackie M Caster Live
Mackie came to Pillar with the idea of creating a portable solution to help bloggers and other content creators improve their audio quality and control. Branching away from their typical client in the pro-audio space, the new device was designed to cater to the needs of social streamers, gamers, podcasters, DJs, and other creators and make the audio mixing experience more simple and affordable. To appeal to a different audience, the industrial design of the unit utilizes color, customizable lighting, and rounder forms that make the unit feel modern yet approachable and still relate to Mackie’s extended line of products.
Pillar also refined the user interface and control layout by grouping related inputs and controls together to help streamline the user’s experience and provide a more intuitive process for first time users who may have be intimidated by large audio mixing equipment in the past. In order to target non-US markets, we created a symbol set for the buttons and inputs that eliminated the need for language specific text on the device, communicating button and input functions through a series of icons.
Design Process
Pillar worked with LOUD/Mackie to design a portable live-streaming mixer for content creators, progressing through four rounds from open-ended exploration to a production-ready specification. The first rounds addressed the interaction model and interface logic. This work mapped the user journey and tested layouts that grouped each input with its associated controls. Subsequent rounds introduced industrial-design concepts that defined the device's eventual form, including a contrasting face plate, a simplified knob arrangement, a consistent iconography, and programmable underglow lighting. The team then reduced a set of distinct forms to a single direction and resolved the remaining details of branding, knob labeling, and color, material, and finish.
Knob-driven sound shaping
A central design decision placed audio processing under single rotary controls rather than a screen-based menu. On the M Caster Live, an FX selector chooses among seven processing presets that cover EQ, compression, and filtering, and a separate knob sets the degree to which the preset is applied. The user can easily control audio through tactile knobs, simplifying the experience. A matching pair of StreamFX controls handles voice-changing effects, with one knob selecting the effect and a second adjusting its intensity.
Plug-in-and-go connectivity
Pillar designed the input scheme so that sources could be connected and selected with minimal setup. The device accepts an XLR microphone, a gaming headset, a line or instrument source, a computer over USB, and a smartphone through a TRRS connection that both sends and receives audio. Input selector switches determine which source is active on each channel and illuminate to show the current selection. This decision derives from the input-grouping layouts and illuminated selectors tested in the first design round.
